Academic Advocacy

The Student Association’s trained Academic Advocates are on your side! An advocate will work to address your academic problems, guide you through the College’s Academic Policies, and ensure that your rights as a student are upheld.

  • Failed a course?
  • Think you’ve been unfairly graded?
  • Having problem with an instructor?
Just remember, you have 10 days from the day you received the disputed grade to request for a reassessment of work or to initiate an appeal of a final grade.

Academic Advocacy Program

The Appeals program is designed to provide students with the necessary tools and guidance they need to resolve academic issues they might face during their time here at George Brown College. The program draws from the college policies (http://www.georgebrown.ca/policies/index.aspx) to inform students of their rights and responsibilities as GBC students.

The appeals staff acts as a friendly point of reference for students; to help them better understand college polices and procedures. The staff explains the process in which to follow according to the college policies and depending on their particular case, to request an academic appeal, a reassessment of work, or an educational complaint resolution.

Student representation is at the core of the program, the goal is to empower the students to become self advocates and ask for their rights to be respected; as well as encourage them to voice out their concerns with respect to their academic experience at the college. There are policies that affect students negatively; the program also takes part in making recommendations to the policies in place by department. A detailed report is being given to the deans whose faculties/programs have the highest level of appeals with a set of recommendations at the end of the school year. Because of the high number of appeals and the complexity of each case, students need to book an appointment with the appeals staff. The program is run by a coordinator and two part time appeals support staffs who are GBC students, and it is available to all students across all campuses.
