Job Description:

As a videographer at The Dialog you will be responsible for producing high-quality videos that tell a story on in conjunction with the work of other staff reporters. You must have the ability to work on tight deadlines. Previous journalistic experience is an asset but not required.

General Responsibilities:

• Come up with good story ideas that are of interest to our readers.
• Stay informed of news and current events on campus and in the community.
• Produce high-quality photos and videos of compelling stories.
• Train reporters on taking photos and video footage for use with their stories.
• Coordinate photos, videos and graphics to accompany stories by staff reporters
• Promoting The Dialog online, through social media, and handing out hard copies of the newspaper.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

• Ability to produce photo and video content with a strong sense of storytelling.
• Working in a diverse and demanding office where teamwork and communication is vital.
• The ability to work to strict deadlines, have excellent communication skills, be willing to follow established style guides and have the desire to work in a student collective environment.
• An electronic portfolio of your photo and video work should be included with your application.

Reporter-editors at The Dialog play a key role in our student community. They gather information and prepare stories for our student publications and inform us about newsworthy events and happenings in our community. They present factual information on current issues and report on the actions of public officials, executives, special interest groups, and others who exercise power.

General Responsibilities:
• Will pitch story ideas to and be assigned articles from the managing editor.
• Will be responsible for their assigned articles each issue.
• Responsible for creating stories that are factual and compelling with accompanying photos.
• Will be responsible for editing a section of the newspaper each issue.
• Will keep accurate and up to date records of research, interviews, etc.
• Will file stories and photos in a timely and accurate manner.
• Promoting The Dialog online, through social media, and handing out hard copies of the newspaper.
• Other duties as needed.

Requirements:
• Writing articles for a newspaper, newsletter, or website, or experience in other forms of communication with a strong sense of news writing.
• Working in a diverse and demanding office where teamwork and communication is vital.
• Working with digital photography or video is an asset.
• Reporter-editors will have the ability to work to strict deadlines, have excellent communication skills, be willing to follow established style guides and have the desire to work in a student collective environment.
• Up to three writing, photography or video samples may be included with your application.

Job Description:
The editor shall be responsible for guiding the student editorial staff of The Dialog, with support from the publications and communications co-ordinator. The editor will be responsible for insuring that stories are of the highest quality. They are also responsible for helping edit content for all sections of The Dialog and working with staff to ensure that the print and online editions of The Dialog are published free of errors in a timely manner.

General Responsibilities:

  • Will assign stories to staff reporters and ensure that they meet journalistic standards.
  • Will work with editorial staff on journalistic best practices.
  • Ensuring that the assistant editor has all stories scheduled and on deadline for publication.
  • Will be responsible for the overall editorial direction of The Dialog, in line with the SA mission statement.
  • Will edit content by prior to publication, ensuring that the stories are accurate and fair.
  • Other duties as needed and assigned by the publications and communications co-ordinator.

Skills:

  • Writing or editing articles for a newspaper, newsletter, website, blog or other forms of communication
  • Has strong news judgment.
  • Working in a diverse and demanding office where teamwork and communication is vital.
  • Working with digital photography, Adobe Creative Suite is an asset.
  • The ability to work to strict deadlines, have excellent leadership skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with other students.
  • An editing and Canadian Press Style test will be required as part of the interview process.
