Statement of solidarity with Black Lives Matter Toronto’s Pride demands

We, the Student Association of George Brown College, celebrate that the leadership of Black queer and trans folks has a proud history. Black queer and trans folks deserve safety at home, on the streets, and in school. Black queer and trans folks deserve to take up space—at Pride—and in our student movement. Black Lives Matter Toronto’s peaceful tactics and civil disobedience is rooted in love for our most vulnerable communities to create more inclusive movements for queer and trans liberation. We know queer and trans students of colour deserve to be supported and served by our student movement.

As stated in our mission, we are “committed to supporting each other in the struggle for student rights, the pursuit of a quality education and the provision of services in a safe, accessible and equitable environment.” Black Lives Matter is part of that education. And the work to eliminate systemic Anti-Blackness within Toronto Pride and the greater community is a barrier to dismantle together. We state our solidarity with Black Lives Matter Toronto for their actions at Pride. We support BLMTO’s demands to Pride which can be read here:

We want to show BLMTO and Black students love in this time of anti-black racist backlash. We support you. We will continue to support you
